5 Business Must Reads

by Theresa Schempp

As Confucius once said, “You cannot open a book without learning something.” While reading takes a back burner in our chaotic and busy lives, it has been shown that the most successful people prioritize reading in their everyday routine. Therefore, one of the best ways to learn about ways to grow your business is through reading the experiences of those who succeeded. To inspire you, here is our list of the five best business books to pick up:

1.       “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey

You will most likely find this book in the library of every successful person and those who wish to be. This cult classic approaches the concept of being effective in obtaining your goals by aligning yourself with “true north” principles. He claims this concept to be universal and timeless, with habits that you can implement today (even when it was written in 1989).

2.       “Business Adventures” by John Brooks

This is Bill Gates’ favorite book (fun fact: he has Warren Buffet’s copy), and for good reason. It is a compilation of Brooks’ New Yorker articles from Wall street of the 1960s, with the intent to showcase all aspects of a business through separate examples. He includes featuring General Electric, Ford, and even Piggly Wiggly.

3.       “Principles” by Ray Dalio

Dalio build Bridgewater Associates into the world’s biggest hedge fund. He credits his growth to conflict, such as encouraging organizational opposition and transparency. In this book he discusses the tools you’ll need to create strong teams, approach a challenge and make tough decisions.

4.       “Tools of Titans” by Tim Ferriss

In this book, Tim Ferriss compiles over 200 interviews from “world-class performers” that he showcased on his podcast The Tim Ferriss Show. His guests range from business to almost every other industry. These interviews capture the best business advice the interviewees have to give, all within a single book.

5.       “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight

This is the autobiography of Phil Knight, the founder of Nike. He shares his journey of how he built his business to become one of the most profitable and iconic in the world. Hearing it first-hand from the founder his experiences is what makes this book so compelling to entrepreneurs.
