Your Website is your Business Card

By Theresa Schempp

In today’s business world, if you don’t have a website, you virtually don’t exist to your customers. Even if you have established social media platforms and offices, if your customers cannot look at your website, your retention rate plummets. According to the eCommerce Foundation, 88% of consumers research a product online before they make a purchase. Your first impression needs to be memorable, and that includes your online presence.

When building your online presence, think of it as if you are walking into a networking event. But instead of walking into a room of 20 people, you are entering a room of millions. Before you become overwhelmed, break it down in how you’d approach a networking event in person.

Introducing yourself. In a networking event, you shake hands with different people and give them your name and the name of your business. Similarly, social media platforms give your customers a short snippet of who you and your company are. Whether it is an Instagram post or an ad on Facebook, how your posts are designed will catch people’s attention who want to learn more.

You control the conversation. Unlike in person where it is a give and take conversation, your website contains that narrative that you decide. You can create your own story, share your mission, and have your audience relate to you on a personal level without ever meeting them.

Your business is never closed. Whether it’s 3pm or 3am, customers can access your services and information at any time. A business that is more convenient will ultimately receive the most customers, and your website will cater to your audience without your constant supervision.

Your business card. When you hand out your business card at networking events, it is literally what people take away about your business. The same goes for your website. People will “google” a business faster than you could have a conversation with them, and what greets them first on your website is what they will remember. Without a website, you lose business. But if you have a memorable and compelling website that caters to your customers, your business is much more likely to increase substantially.
